Comedy trends

I don’t know about anyone els, but I’ve really noticed a trend in comedy revolving around “stupid” men. Especially shows about men who are constantly doing what they think is right for their family, but just failing: According to Jim, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Two and a half men, George Lopez Show,Bernie Mac Show, ETC. Commercials do it and it must be pretty succesful if there is so many copys out there. Not to say I don’t like the shows like this or ads that capitilize on this type of comedy, but it has to get old at some point. What might be funny about it is the fact that the men acting in the stupid way is a) relatable and also b) something men probably aren’t proud of.  In this commercial the guy in obviuosly very inadvertant of the woman. I don’t think this represents any men out there, but I can relate to that happening. What I thought was interesting was the choice of a model lounging as the target for this, which is ironically supposed to be what the guy “should” really want. This is also another way they sell beer: shock humor. They frequently use the same concept of: man doing harsh thing to model woman for beer, in about ALL OF THEIR ADS. Look them up on youtube. Some of them are quite funny, but it does get old. Thats why all those sitcoms I mentioned earlier are pretty much over, but stupid humor will probably never die.

Man’s Last Stand?

Hi everyone, I have never blogged before so I hope this ends up in the right place.

To give a little background information, this is a commercial on during the last Superbowl. Personally I didn’t see it when it aired, but it definitely left a strong message with me when I saw it on youtube.

My initial impression was confused. What type of relationships are these guys in!? You’re carrying around her lip balm…so you can drive a dodge charger? A lot of these things weren’t TOO bad. The wife or girlfriend wants him to be on time to work? That sucks! The idea created by this commercial of a “normal” heterosexual relationship just seems depressing. Your car is your last escape from your significant other…What shocks me the most is the thought of who made this and who it’s geared to.

On the side of the maker’s of this commercial, I think those things are potential problems in relationships. The main idea the maker’s put forward: Women can be controlling, all men are whipped, but do the thing you want to do because it’s what men do: Buy a Dodge Charger.

Notice how the background is blurred out in the second and third men. The scene’s lighting seems drab and sets a disinterested tone. The narrator describes having to listen to “talking about her friends” and the usual stuff in which the man is just so bored and fed up with. Also the commercial shows four different men that look like they are in different stages of life, yet none of them are exempt from the cruel expectations of their woman.

“Cruel” expectations…. Right. I think in any relationship, there must be accommodations for the opposite sex. With that in mind, listen to the complaints of the narrator very closely. A lot of the things are basic hygiene stuff. It’s not that hard to wash the hair out of the sink after shaving. It’s not that hard to put your laundry away. These sound like things “men” shouldn’t have a problem with if they are responsible regardless of if they in a relationship. Last thoughts: I think this commercial is absurd, and a little bit sexist towards men AND women; maybe it cancels out…or maybe I should buy a charger.
