“March of Shame”

I thought this video was hilarious because it discussed the “March of Shame” like an animal planet special. This video discusses the double standards that are present around us and focus in on the infamous college walk of shame.

They discuss the shameful walk that girls who hook up with guys have to take back to their dorms or sororities the morning after the incident has occurred. The video uses many examples to show that the girls are full of shame and regret and how they must make this humiliating walk where they will be judged harshly. According to the movie however the girls “self destructive instincts run high” and they will put themselves in a situation for this to happen again. While the girls have to take this “march of shame” the guys partake in a “dance of glory.”  The video calls this nature’s cruelest double standard.

The idea of double standards has been discussed a lot on this blog and I think this video emphasizes the perceived college attitude of sex for males and females. The standard according to the video is that not only is it wrong for girls to go out and hook up with guys but they also have to endure judgment  after this happens, where as the guys can celebrate and won’t be judged at all.

Although sex is the main issue in the video it isn’t the only place where double standards occur. From relationships to work environments these double standards are everywhere, but what causes them? Is it a women who sets these standards, that are different than men’s, on other women or is it men that place these unequal standards on women and vice versa for men? If men put these double standards on women I think these double standards are unfair, however, I think that if other women put these standards on women that although they aren’t equal to the standards of men they aren’t necessarily unfair.

  1. This video is so funny! It is also really good at pointing out how ridiculous it is that women have to so much more to be ashamed than men. For the guys hooking up is a good thing and something to be congratulated on, but for the women, they have to hide it because its so unacceptable for them. I think both men and women set the double standard, because as seen in the video, other women were also the ones harshly judging the walk of shamers.

  2. Brilliant. This little skit is simply hilarious. The double standard is clearly evident here with the ‘March of Shame” and “Dance of Glory”. And the post is correct in saying that it depends on who is placing the double standard. It can’t really be a double standard if girls are judging girls; it would just be a standard. From my perspective, I feel that double standards are self propagating. If girls would stop placing themselves in these situations, and guys would stop pressuring said girls to be in these situations, the standard would disolve.

  3. This video is hilarious and clearly shows the double standards that are put on girls and guys. But I don’t think its one or the other sex putting the standard there, I think its both of them. Guys will criticize or judge girls just as much as other girls would. You even see the guys who are laying with girls on the quad giving mean glares at the girls coming back. So it will probably just continue for many generations to come because no matter how these boys are treating them I still see tons of girls go out every weekend and come back the next morning all over again.
